› is the build system really free?
yes. the entire build engine — object store, dag runner, functions, cli and daemon — is open source. self-host it forever at no cost.
› what exactly am i paying for?
orchestration: automatically triggered builds, deployment pipelines, a hosted build fleet, managed secrets, rbac and audit. the automation a corporate ci/cd system needs on top of the core.
› can i move off cloud later?
always. cloud runs the same open-source daemon you can self-host, so your builds and cache stay portable. there is no proprietary build format to trap you.
› how is usage metered?
cloud is priced per active seat. hosted fleet compute beyond the included allowance is billed by the minute — and cache hits cost nothing, because nothing is rebuilt.
